Something Apple fans have been wondering about for years is the possibility of touchscreen MacBooks. Many laptop brands around the world have been shipping laptops with touchscreens for years now, but Apple has refrained from doing the same. Apple is known to take its time perfecting each new technology, so when they finally implement it into their devices they do it the “Apple way”. Now, a leak hints at Apple working on a new line of MacBooks with touchscreen panels.
First leak happened in January
This isn’t the first time news about touchscreen MacBooks has leaked. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, a well-known and trusted individual in the tech world especially regarding Apple, reported in January of this year that Apple was working on touchscreen MacBooks. Back then, he claimed that Apple was looking for a potential release date of 2025 for this new line of MacBooks.
Apple has reportedly contracted Samsung and LG
Samsung and LG have long been partners with Apple; supplying it with LCD and OLED panels custom tailored for its devices. A renowned leaker who goes by the username Tech_Reve on X, known for his accurate leaks in the past, has provided some information on the matter. According to Tech_Reve, Apple has contracted Samsung and LG for touchscreen OLED panels for its MacBooks.
The leaker claims Apple will use Y-OCTA technology by Samsung and Touch On Encapsulation (TOE) technology from LG. These technologies will apparently let Apple manufacture touchscreen panels that are thinner than traditional panels and will also help cut costs. Tech_Reve also reveals both the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro will feature these touchscreen OLED panels.
If Apple really is making a move towards shifting to touchscreen displays on its laptops, it will be a somewhat unprecedented move. Steve Jobs, co-founder and ex-CEO of Apple, had always disliked the idea of touchscreens on laptops. He called the idea “ergonomically terrible”, and Apple’s decision to implement touchscreen displays on MacBooks will be a radical shift in how the company views and designs its devices going forward.
