Gram packs a 12th Gen. i7 and an RTX 2050, along with 16GB RAM. This is a somewhat weaker P processor, but the GPU pulls a lot of the work, and I was pretty satisfied with the results in SketchUp.

Plus, there’s also a very hi-res large IPS display, with high color accuracy, which is great for a detailed overview.

Certain compromises had to be made, and the chassis is a bit thinner than usual and feels flimsy compared to other large laptops, like the MacBook Pro and Dell XPS 17.

Moreover, because of the thinner chassis, the machine does get hot every now and then.

Based on the model I tested, this combo performs quite admirably with SketchUp, which is GPU-intensive. An occasional lag is mainly due to 8GB RAM (which is still a faster DDR5 and upgradable). For best results, I’d add 50 bucks and go for 16GB RAM.

IdeaPad Gaming comes with a 15.6” IPS display that’s vivid and easy on the eyes

At 5 lbs of weight and 5-6 hours of battery life, this is a reasonably portable laptop that you can take to school or the office. It’s not LG Gram, but it beats many more expensive gaming laptops in this department.

I also believe many will come to appreciate Lenovo’s keyboards, if they don’t already. The keys are very tactile, responsive and just the right height.

Both TUF’s and Lenovo’s GPUs are the same RTX 3050, except ASUS also comes with a very capable 12th Gen. i5. I thoroughly enjoyed working in SketchUp on TUF — the workflow is easy, fast, and without lags.

This speed has to do with the already-included 16GB RAM, which are quite enough for most SketchUp projects. If you work on very complex details, maybe consider upgrading to 32GB.

I do appreciate TUF’s large display. It’s one thing to have a machine that performs well — but seeing it on a gorgeous, crisp, slightly elevated IPS panel makes the work that much more enjoyable.

Speaking of design, this is a sturdy, sleek machine. A yellow-lit keyboard is the only thing reminding you of a gaming beast underneath this otherwise professional, elegant laptop — and I found the keyboard very comfy and actually pretty.

Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for trackpad, which feels a little spongy, but that’s not a deal-breaker, at least not in my book.

One thing to look out for is that this laptop can get hot. So it would be best to get a cooling pad asap.

But, with light weight and relatively long battery life (7 hours), ASUS TUF is one laptop for SketchUp to consider if you want a mid-range option.

The only bottleneck here is the 8GB RAM — but that’s easily solvable, and I’d upgrade the RAM to 16GB straightaway.

MSI Thin is a good choice for rougher environments — the chassis is plastic, but it’s very sturdy and can withstand harsher conditions. It’s not an indestructible ThinkPad, and you have to take care, but it’s much better than, say, HP Victus.

At 4 lbs, this is one of the most portable laptops on this list. Add to that roughly 7 hours of battery life, and you can get by without lugging a charger around every time you go out.

The display is great for general viewing, but I noticed it’s not the most color-accurate. So take a leaf from my book — MSI’s got a great ports selection, so I simply plug in an external monitor for color-sensitive projects.

For this price range, MSI can be a great, efficient laptop for SketchUp, which won’t cost you arm and leg, but will serve you quite well.

Nitro runs on the latest Ryzen 7 and a powerful RTX 4050, which cut through SketchUp projects like a knife through digital butter. I was impressed by how great this combo worked, and how fast the rendering went.

Plus, a fast, 17.3” IPS display gives you a lot of workspace for your projects and tiny details

Those who know the Nitro series will notice the signature red keyboard has been swapped for beveled, full-RGB backlit keys, which are quite comfortable to touch. I actually like the revamped design, because it looks more professional, although still keeps some of the gamer vibe.

The chassis is pretty sturdy and somewhat heavy at 5.5 lbs, but remember that this is a 17” laptop. However, the battery life has improved over Nitro 5, and I was able to get around 6-7 hours of uninterrupted work.

Nitro 17 gets a bit hot every now and then, but other than that, this is an amazing laptop for SketchUp and far from the budget laptop Nitro 5 once was. It’s a great mid-range solution for many creatives and engineers, and reasonably priced for the power it offers.
