AutoCAD is long-tenured first-choice software for engineers, architects, and other professionals. The popular app gets yearly updates, followed by updated AutoCAD system requirements for newer versions.

Overall, there aren’t any giant leaps from year to year, but it’s worth noticing that the latest AutoCAD 2024 recommends double the memory than the previous five installments. While the recommended specs are straightforward, your usual workload will determine the best combo.

This article will review the minimum and recommended Windows and MacOS systems requirements.

Ready to get rolling? Let’s do it.

CAD work

AutoCAD requires extra horsepower for bulky projects

Minimum Requirements for AutoCAD

AutoCAD requires extra horsepower for bulky projects, but the software can also run on lower-end laptops. This is convenient if you’re an engineering student or are just learning the ins and outs of professional software.

Lower-end laptops can also work nicely with cloud-based software like Fusion 360, which saves both storage and money.

Windows Laptops

A 64-bit version of Windows 10 or 11 is required to install and run AutoCAD.

Generally, AutoCAD is reasonably light on RAM requirements, and you can work with 8GB of memory. However, it would be best to go with 16GB RAM as this is a comfortable minimum for system performance in 2023.

You will also need at least a mid-range CPU. AutoCAD 2023 system requirements for a laptop state a processor with at least 2.5 to 2.9 GHz. While newer versions of AutoCAD can use more processing cores, a higher clock rate is critical for this app.

Luckily, mid-range Intel Core i5 CPUs and AMD equivalents operate within these minimum requirements.

If you’re into 2D rendering, any integrated GPU will suffice. But for 3D projects, I’d recommend a dedicated graphics card with at least 1GB of memory. You will also need at least 10GB of disk space for installation.

I found that a Full HD regular display with True Color is enough to finish projects in AutoCAD. Additionally, your laptop needs 4.8 .NET Framework installed.

MacBooks

AutoCAD system requirements for Mac begin with macOS. You will need Catalina v10.15 or a newer operating system.

The software supports Apple MacBook Pro 5.1, MacBook Air, and MacBook 5.1. Models with prevailing M series chips are supported under Rosetta 2 mode.

You will want a 64-bit Intel CPU or Apple M processor. A system with 4GB of RAM can work with AutoCAD 2023, but it will be challenging, speaking from experience. The Mac version of AutoCAD requires 5GB of disk space.

Apple’s installed graphics cards can run the software according to official system requirements.

Minimum & Recommended System Requirements

While you can run AutoCAD with minimum requirements, everything will go much smoother with beefier specs. Higher-performing laptops can also work with other professional apps like Blender.

Minimum Recommended
CPU12th Gen. Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 513 Gen. Intel Core i7 or higher
RAM16GB32GB
Storage512GB SSD1TB SSD
Display14-inch IPS FHD (1920 x 1080)15.6-inch IPS FHD (1920 x 1080) or higher
GPU4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 16508GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-series

Windows Laptops

You should have a CPU with a base clock over 3 GHz and a turbo boost over 4 to get more out of your AutoCAD. Because the software workflows are mainly single-threaded, you will get the most out of processors with higher clocks, such as Intel’s Core i7-13700K

High-end processors like Core i9-13900K or AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX will maximize AutoCAD performance.

AutoCAD 2023 graphics card requirements state a GPU with 4GB of memory. If you use the software to generate 3D models, opt for a GPU with 106GB/s bandwidth and DirectX 12 support.

Because of the software support, Nvidia professional cards like RTX A4000 are great. Since few laptops have pro cards, you can also go with Nvidia RTX 4060.

If you want maximum performance out of your AutoCAD, I’d check out the GPU beasts like the Nvidia RTX A6000 or one of the high-end consumer models like RTX 4070, 4080, or 4090.

While AutoCAD is not taxing on RAM, getting 32 GB of memory is best. That way, you can get the recommended performance on large projects while other things run on your laptop.

You can get more out of your AutoCAD with a higher resolution display, and a laptop with a 4k screen will give you more clarity and details when creating a project. Laptops for drawing in other apps will also benefit from high-res screens.

AutoCAD doesn’t need much storage space, but bigger m.2 SDDs are a great storage cushion to save all your projects. These will also help with the overall system performance due to the high speed of bigger drives.

MacBooks

For MacBook users, the best solution is a model supporting Metal Graphics Engine. A high-resolution 2880×1800 Retina Display will provide a better overview of your AutoCAD sketch.

The new generation of M chips will provide high computing performance and are supported under Rossetta 2 mode.

Specialized Toolsets

AutoCAD is complex software with numerous specialized toolsets. To get the most out of the popular software, you should comply with the requirements for each toolset.

  • AutoCAD Map 3D needs 20GB of disk space and at least 16GB of RAM. You will also need Microsoft SQL Server 2017 or 2019 standard and enterprise edition. If you’re working with Oracle databases, you must check the system requirements for each FDO provider.
  • AutoCAD Electrical needs Microsoft Access Database Engine 2016, Redistributable or a later version, and 20GB of disk space. If you use AutoCAD Architecture, you will need 20GB of storage and 16GB of RAM.
  • AutoCAD MEP has similar requirements, while Plant 3D needs fewer GB for installation, but you should have 32GB of RAM for 3D modeling. AutoCAD Mechanical and Raster Design don’t have unique requirements outside of disk space for installation.

AutoCAD Map 3D Additional Requirements (Windows Laptops Only)

Your laptop should meet additional requirements for smooth running, especially concerning the FDO (Feature Data Objects) providers and data formats.

FDO Providers are essential components of AutoCAD Map 3D that enable connectivity to various data sources and formats. Here are the certified FDO Providers and their associated requirements:

  • Microsoft SQL Server: AutoCAD Map 3D supports several versions of Microsoft SQL Server, including 2016 Standard and Enterprise Editions, 2017 Standard and Enterprise Editions, and 2019 Standard and Enterprise Editions. It’s important to note that Industry Models are also compatible with these SQL Server versions.
  • Oracle: For Oracle databases, AutoCAD Map 3D requires Oracle 12c Release 2 (12.2.0.1.0), Oracle 18c (18.3), or Oracle 19c (19.3), both Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition 2. The Industry Models for Oracle databases align with these versions.
  • Raster Data Formats: AutoCAD Map 3D can work with a variety of raster data formats, including DEM, JPG2K, DTED, MrSID, ECW, PNG, ESRI Grid, TIFF, JPEG, and ESRI® ASCII.
  • Autodesk SDF: The Autodesk SDF format version 3.0 is supported.
  • ESRI ArcGIS: When using the ESRI ArcGIS FDO Provider, you should have ArcGIS versions 10.8.1, 10.7.1, or 10.6.1 installed. Please remember that this provider requires ESRI-licensed components installed on the client system.
  • MySQL: AutoCAD Map 3D supports MySQL version 8.0.
  • ODBC: The FDO ODBC provider has been tested with corresponding versions of ODBC drivers shipped with the relevant supported operating systems version.
  • OGC Standards: AutoCAD Map 3D supports various OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) standards, including WMS 1.3.0, WMTS 1.0.0, and WFS 2.0.0.
  • SQLite: Version 3.27.2 of SQLite is required for compatibility.
  • PostgreSQL: When working with PostgreSQL databases, you’ll need PostgreSQL version 12.2 or higher, along with PostGIS 3.0.
